Asheville Watchdog is a volunteer-run, deliberately nonprofit investigative news organization staffed by retired professional journalists and news executives. It was granted 501(c)(3) status as a charitable corporation operating in the public interest for the citizens of Asheville, Buncombe County, and citizens of Western North Carolina. Watchdog stories are distributed free to other news organizations in the area, in the belief that quality journalism is essential for a successful democracy.
But that doesn’t mean that quality journalism is free. It’s expensive to buy liability insurance, hire legal and bookkeeping services, host a dynamic website, and operate a small business. Eventually we’d like to hire full-time reporters, editors, and other news operations professionals in order to expand the information services The Watchdog can offer to our community.
All donations to Asheville Watchdog are tax-deductible.
